A New Discount Grocery Store Arrives in Montreal

Montrealers will be happy to learn that a branch of the popular store Les Escomptes St-Jean will open in their city this fall.

The new branch will open its doors towards the end of October or the beginning of November. The store will be located at 1855 O'Brien Street, in the premises of the former Mourelatos supermarket, in the Saint-Laurent borough.

In an interview with 24 heures, the owner, Yves Dubé, assured that the concept would be the same as that of the first branch located in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

Les Escomptes St-Jean manage to offer products at an advantageous price because the store operates as a 'grocery surplus' and thus, you can find items bought in bulk, sold at a discount.

Yves Dubé explained that the products offered in his store depend on the supply from his suppliers: “Sometimes I can buy a complete container, sometimes I buy two pallets.”

To find the best deals, Mr. Dubé must constantly maintain contact with several suppliers who suddenly find themselves with a surplus: “For example, there may be a packaging defect on the product, like a tab that peels off with difficulty and must be cut with scissors rather than torn by hand. The company that ordered it doesn’t want it because it’s not perfect, so the supplier ends up stuck with it.”

In some cases, a product may end up in surplus because the manufacturer decided to change the format of one of its items. Once the old version of the product is withdrawn, the boxes of the old format that have not yet been sold will end up in the quick resale market.

The businessman has a very effective way of promoting his specials, simply by posting them on social media. Many subscribers actively monitor the page to make sure they don’t miss any discount.

A section for fruits and vegetables will also be present in the new Montreal branch.
