Tips and Crafts

For Halloween, we love giving children (and adults) original and thematic treats.

It's a great time to reinvent a classic: Rice Krispies squares! This time, we make them look like orange pumpkins or friendly monsters!

Here's how to prepare them.

Note: To keep the cereal from sticking to your hands while shaping them into spheres, rub your hands with vegetable oil before forming each ball.

1. The pumpkins

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup (65 g) butter
  • 1 bag large marshmallows (about 40 marshmallows)
  • 6 cups (1500 g) Rice Krispies
  • Liquid red and yellow food coloring
  • Mini Rolos
  • Green M & M’s
  • ¼ cup (65 ml) cooking oil in a small bowl (to prevent sticking to hands)

Instructions:

  1. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat.
  2. Add the marshmallows and stir until they are completely melted and incorporated with the butter.
  3. Remove from heat and add several drops of yellow food coloring (6 to 12 drops).
  4. Mix and add the red food coloring, drop by drop, mixing as you go. (4 to 6 drops)
  5. Add the Rice Krispies and mix.
  6. Coat both sides of your hands with a generous amount of cooking oil and roll the Rice Krispies mixture into small balls.
  7. Place the balls on parchment paper.
  8. While the balls are still warm, gently press a Mini Rolo onto the top of each pumpkin to form the stem.
  9. Add a green M & M next to it to form a leaf.
  10. Let cool until firm.

2. The monsters

Ingredients

For the Rice Krispie treats:

  • ¼ cup (65 g) butter
  • 1 bag large marshmallows (about 40 marshmallows)
  • ½ teaspoon (2.5 ml) vanilla extract
  • 6 cups (1500 g) Rice Krispies

For the monster icing:

  • Pink, orange, blue, and vibrant green chocolate wafers (or white chocolate with food coloring) or Candy Melts
  • Edible eyes (or marshmallow slices and chocolate wafers)
  • Cooking oil

Instructions

For the Rice Krispie rectangles:

  1. Spray a 9"x13" baking dish.
  2. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat
  3. Add the marshmallows and stir until they are completely melted and combined with the butter.
  4. Remove from heat and add the vanilla extract and Rice Krispies. Stir to combine.
  5. Pour the mixture into the baking dish. Using a spatula sprayed with cooking spray, gently press until evenly coated.
  6. Let cool until firm and cut into rectangles.

For the monster icing:

  1. Melt about 1 cup of chocolate wafers in a small microwave-safe bowl at 50% power for 1 minute.
  2. Mix and continue microwaving at 50% power for 30 seconds until fully melted.
  3. Add ½ teaspoon (2.5 ml) to 2 teaspoons (10 ml) of cooking oil to the melted chocolate and mix.
  4. Dip the Rice Krispies rectangles into the melted chocolate and place on parchment paper.
  5. Place the candy eyes gently into the chocolate coating to create monster faces.
  6. Let cool at room temperature for about 40 minutes or until the chocolate is completely hardened.

Happy Halloween feasting!
