For Halloween, we love giving children (and adults) original and thematic treats.
It's a great time to reinvent a classic: Rice Krispies squares! This time, we make them look like orange pumpkins or friendly monsters!
Here's how to prepare them.
Note: To keep the cereal from sticking to your hands while shaping them into spheres, rub your hands with vegetable oil before forming each ball.
1. The pumpkins
Ingredients
- ¼ cup (65 g) butter
- 1 bag large marshmallows (about 40 marshmallows)
- 6 cups (1500 g) Rice Krispies
- Liquid red and yellow food coloring
- Mini Rolos
- Green M & M’s
- ¼ cup (65 ml) cooking oil in a small bowl (to prevent sticking to hands)
Instructions:
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat.
- Add the marshmallows and stir until they are completely melted and incorporated with the butter.
- Remove from heat and add several drops of yellow food coloring (6 to 12 drops).
- Mix and add the red food coloring, drop by drop, mixing as you go. (4 to 6 drops)
- Add the Rice Krispies and mix.
- Coat both sides of your hands with a generous amount of cooking oil and roll the Rice Krispies mixture into small balls.
- Place the balls on parchment paper.
- While the balls are still warm, gently press a Mini Rolo onto the top of each pumpkin to form the stem.
- Add a green M & M next to it to form a leaf.
- Let cool until firm.

For the monster icing:
- Melt about 1 cup of chocolate wafers in a small microwave-safe bowl at 50% power for 1 minute.
- Mix and continue microwaving at 50% power for 30 seconds until fully melted.
- Add ½ teaspoon (2.5 ml) to 2 teaspoons (10 ml) of cooking oil to the melted chocolate and mix.

- Place the candy eyes gently into the chocolate coating to create monster faces.
- Let cool at room temperature for about 40 minutes or until the chocolate is completely hardened.
