Caramel, chocolate, pecans... Do these ingredients sound familiar? Yes indeed! The famous Turtles chocolates! A unique, sensationally comforting taste. A perfectly suited treat for the holiday season!

However, when buying them, one might find that Turtles chocolates are a little pricey. Or, one might prefer to control the ingredients included in what we consume.

Thus, we can make our own marvelous chocolate "turtles," filled with caramel and maybe even slightly salted for our gatherings, as a gift, or just for our own pleasure.

The following recipe requires no baking, is easy to make, and allows you to have fun mixing, for example, milk chocolate with dark chocolate, salting or not, etc.

Once you've tasted these wonderful bites, you won't want to buy the famous orange box anymore!

It's time to try it out!

Ingredients :

  • 8 ounces (250 g) of pecan halves (roasted or not, salted or not)
  • 25 unwrapped caramel squares (about 1 cup, 250 g)
  • 1/4 cup (65 ml) of cream
  • 16 ounces (500 g) of roughly chopped chocolate, melted (dark or milk)
  • Optional: sea salt

Preparation :

  1. Line two baking sheets or large trays with parchment paper.
  2. Make small piles of pecans, using 5 to 6 pieces per pile. (Stack the pecans so the caramel doesn’t seep through).
  3. In a medium microwave-safe bowl, add the caramels and half of the cream, and microwave at full power to melt, stopping every 30 seconds to stir, for about 3 to 4 minutes in total, or until the caramel is well softened. If the mixture seems thick and needs more cream, add the remaining amount.
  4. Add about 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of caramel on top of each pile of pecans. Set aside.
  5. Pour 8 ounces of chocolate (250 g) into a medium microwave-safe bowl and melt by heating for about 1 minute at full power, 15 seconds at a time, until the chocolate is fully melted. Melt additional chocolate if needed.
  6. Add about 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of chocolate on top of each pecan cluster, covering them from above and allowing it to spill over to the sides.
  7. If desired, sprinkle a pinch of sea salt on each turtle.
  8. Let the turtles set at room temperature (this will take several hours) or in the fridge or freezer (about 15 minutes) before serving.

These turtles can be stored for several weeks in the fridge and several months in the freezer.

But it’s highly unlikely they will last several months! These delights are likely to disappear in just a few days!

You can place these wonderful chocolates in a nice box or glass jar and give them as a gift to people you love enough to share them with!
