One of our colleagues from Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean tasted it and frankly says what he thinks!
Last week, the company Viandomax launched a commercial version of the famous tourtière from Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. Since our team counts a Bleuet native directly from this region, we asked them to test the product to get their opinion! Here is their testimony:
«I was born and have lived most of my life in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, so I believe I have the necessary experience to determine if the product offered by Viandomax lives up to what it promises, namely "a real tourtière from Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean".
Let's not beat around the bush, it's almost shocking how surprising the Viandomax tourtière is.
I say it's "almost shocking" because preparing "a real tourtière from the Lac" is practically an art and let's face it, the version offered by Viandomax is nothing to sneeze at.
From the very first bite, you know immediately that you're dealing with the real tourtière. Here, we're not talking about a taste that comes close, but indeed the taste of the Lac tourtière.
If the tourtière is cooked by following the instructions carefully, you will get the perfect texture. On the surface, you will have a well-crusted and golden dough, while inside, the dough will be moist and flavorful.
As for the potatoes and meat, I will evaluate them together here because these two ingredients are interconnected in a tourtière.
First of all, the quality of the meat and potatoes is really optimal. This is where it all plays out in a good tourtière. For example, commercial tourtières sold in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean are often very disappointing because the potatoes used are mushy and of poor quality, while the meat is often very ordinary.
In the case of the Viandomax tourtière, not only is the quality of the potatoes highly satisfactory, but the meat seems to be of excellent quality.
Now, once you judge the tourtière as a whole, everything you wish to find is there. The flavors are well-presented and the result has a very satisfying humidity, which will save you from needing to use ketchup.
However, you should know that the Viandomax tourtière requires several hours of cooking, so plan to put it in the oven at the beginning of the day if you don't want to have dinner too late.
Follow the instructions carefully to ensure the dough retains its moisture!
Finally, I promise you that once you finally taste this tourtière, you will understand why people from Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean are offended when offered a meat pie while being told it's a tourtière!
Bon appétit!»
