If you are just getting started in your weight loss journey, you probably already heard unsolicited tips from family and friend on losing weight. Buzz Feed actually interview people who lost 50 pounds or more to share their tips and tell us what really works for them. Here are 10 of the best:

1. Avoid the scale or mirror

You are probably very excited by losing weight, however it can be lengthy process. By constantly weighing yourself or looking in a full-scale mirror, you may get discourage especially the first move. Instead, focus on how your body feels and not how it looks. Results will come!

2. Start somewhere

You need to get through that first workout, even if you are trying for the millionth time to get back in shape. You will probably struggle the first minutes or so, but will feel so much better once you are done. The important thing is to finish what your start.

3. Start slow and small

By setting a doable goal, you are more likely to stick to it. For example, your first step could be to start working out for 20 minutes 2 times a week. When you feel comfortable you can increase intensity and time.

4. Learn to count calories

Most people have actually no idea how many calories are inside their food and even drinks. By being self-aware of what you are putting in your body, it will be easier to make healthier changes. Everything counts at the end of the day, even that handful of chips and candies! You can even find apps on your smartphone to help you count.

5. Stay away processed carbs and white sugar

The first week will feel like hell and you will probably have headaches and be grumpy - that is your body reacting. Carbs and sugar addiction is a real thing and can be very hard to cut off. However as time passes you will see a real difference on your body!

6. Remind yourself why you want to lose weight

You can write a letter to yourself or ask your partner to remind why you started your weight loss journey. That way, when you feel lazy or lack motivation, you will have a reminder on why you started in the first place. You will probably need it somewhere in that journey.

7. Try to give up a bad food for a period of time

If your bad habit is dessert, try to give up sweets for 1 week first. As you progress your taste will change and you will start craving healthy food. For example instead of ice cream, get low fat greek yogurt with fresh fruits.

8. Walk more

Instead of taking the elevators - take the stairs. If you are taking the bus or subway get off a few stations earlier to walk more to your destination. This is an easy way to add more exercise in your weekly routine and you will see the pounds drop off!

9. Use technology

If you are just starting, you may feel embarrassed or uncomfortable by going to the gym (not that you should be). Instead, you can use technology such as working out apps or even your Wii to workout at home!

10. Cook at home

Eating home-cooked meals and avoiding fast foods will significantly decrease your calorie intake. If you are too busy during the week, you can meal prep on weekends and have lunches ready for work!
