One of the joys of spring is to see birds coming back to our yards. Their return lifts morale, because it announces the imminent beautiful sunny days!

But, in addition to the announcement of summer, the presence of birds has a positive impact on humans. These feathered animals would indeed contribute to our happiness, according to a study which was carried out by a German team.

Turns out, the more we see and hear birds chirping and singing, the happier we are. A team from the German Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research has found that being surrounded by a wide variety of birds can provide life satisfaction augmented by the equivalent of receiving $ 150 per week in extra income!

According to this study, seeing 10% more bird species generates satisfaction comparable to increased income.

“We also looked at the socio-economic data of the respondents and, to our surprise, we found that bird diversity is as important to their life satisfaction as their income,” said Dr Katrin Böhning-Gaese.

Another study from the Polytechnic University of California found that placing speakers with a variety of bird sounds on hiking trails improved the outdoor experience. It was also noted that no difference was observed in the level of happiness of hikers, whether the sounds of the birds were artificial, prerecorded or natural.

In an unprecedented year of loss, stress and uncertainty, the heartwarming sounds of nature have been crucial. A recent report from the Audubon Company found that sales of bird feeders, bird food and birding apps have all increased during the pandemic. Additionally, attendance at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology Global Big Day 2020 broke records.

If your spirits are a little low right now, try attracting birds to your garden!
