The Farmers' Almanac just released its annual forecast for winter 2022 and a nice mix of temperatures is to be expected. The group, which has been doing this exercise for over 200 years with a 80% accuracy foresees a severe cold winter calling it "season of shivers."
According to them, in the U.S., we are talking about a much colder temperature with little precipitation. Small storms will however occur at the end of the month of February. The trend will continue in early March as well. An early spring is unfortunately not expected.
Many storms are expected in January 2022 on the Atlantic coast, as the winter will be wet and many days of rain and snow are expected.
However, good news if you live in Canada! Temperatures will be milder than usual over much of eastern and central Canada for the first part of the month, with a cooler trend starting only in February. So you can probably enjoy the month of January before starting to freeze in the season of shivers!
Indeed, February will be very cold but the storms should be less present. "For example, in Quebec and the Maritimes, it is calculated that there will be on average nearly 60% fewer days of measurable precipitation, compared to January," according to the Farmers Almanac.
Finally, in March, you shouldn't expect to experience the beginning of spring because the equinox will bring with it fairly low temperatures for the season across the the New England area, parts of the Appalachian region, throughout the Ohio Valley, in the northern part of the Deep South, and even in southern New Mexico and in Canada.
The Old Farmer's Almanac editor, Janice Stillman, said this winter could be "one of the longest and coldest that we’ve seen in years." At least, you've been warned!
