Why does my house sometimes smell like sewers?

The strong smells can come from many places in a house and spread all over the house afterwards, leaving a smell of septic tank hovering in the air, and several causes can lead to this phenomenon.

Here are 3 main areas to watch in your home.

A musty smell in the house: Check the basement:

If you do not use your basement often, it's possible for strange smells to emanate from it.

Check these 3 places:

1) The drain:

If your washer and dryer, or your water heater, or any other appliance with a drain is located in the basement, make sure that the water level in the drain is normal. When using the basin and sink for a long periods of time, water may evaporate, which could consequently leave sewer gases in the room.

You can easily solve the problem by pouring a glass of water down the drain. This will restore levels in the drain and push the sewer gases down.

2) A missing maintenance cap:

This is another potential reason for floor drains. A missing maintenance plug leaves room for the sewage gases to come out and straight into your house.

If the part is missing, you can easily find a replacement part at most hardware stores in your area.

3) A broken water pipe:

The biggest but also hardest to repair cause is a broken water pipe. A broken or cracked water pipe creates sewer odors in a basement. This can happen when pipes are not visible, such as when they are located in the walls or under floors. Hiring a plumber specialized in finding leaks may be necessary in this case.

Sewer odors from the shower drain:

You will need:

-Soap

-D'eau

-A scrubbing brush

How to:

1) Simply wash the bath and shower drain thoroughly.

2) To prevent odors from recurring, wash and disinfect the drain and bath and shower drain regularly

3) Run cold water for several long minutes

4) If odors persist, they may be coming from the pipes. Soap, baking soda, white vinegar, hot water and a "snake" to remove the hair caught in the pipe.

Sewer odors in the toilet:

You will need:

-500 ml (2 cups) white vinegar

-1/2 cup (125 g) baking soda

-Boiling water

How to:

1) First pour a large pot of boiling water into the drain

2) Add the baking soda and wait a little

3) Add 500 ml (2 cups) white vinegar mixed with 250 m (1 cup) boiling water

4) Leave 20 minutes

5) Then rinse with more water
