Remembrance Day is a memorial day to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty during the First World War. To mark the event this year, The Niagara Falls history museum put up an impressive art display of hand crocheted and knitted poppies made by people from around the world.
Niagara Falls is commemorating those who protected our freedoms with that beautiful art installation cascading over the History Museum.
The project was realized in conjunction with Stick'N Needles, a stitching association from the region. The two together asked the public for knitted and crocheted poppies and the response was quite overwhelming, to this day they are over 11,000 poppy donations!
They come from other provinces in Canada but also from twenty-five different states in the U.S.! There are also some poppies coming from as far as Denmark and New Zealand. But they didn't come alone, they are also heartfelt letters dedicated to family members of those who died during the several wars that have affected the globe.
The administration of the Museum estimated that people spend over 4,500 hours knitting and crocheting the 11,000 poppies! Simply affixing the poppies to netting took over 670 hours. But that is nothing compared to the men and women who gave their lives to make us safe.
You can see the poppies displayed on the historic 1874stone building. The City hope to see more of these art installations in the years to come.
