Sir David Attenborough is a British science writer, screenwriter, actor and naturalist who is known for his tireless efforts in raising awareness for the world around us and making every attempt to preserve nature. We hear his voice as narrator of documentaries such as “The Blue Planet” and “Planet Earth.” 3 weeks ago, he wrote a Facebook post that has nearly 500,000 shares.

We can read this:

In the last five years the bee population has dropped by 1/3. If bees were to disappear from the face of the earth, humans would have just four years left to live. This time of year bees can often look like they are dying or dead, however, they’re far from it. Bees can become tired and they simply don’t have enough energy to return to the hive which can often result in being swept away. If you find a tired bee in your home, a simple solution of sugar and water will help revive an exhausted bee. Simply mix two tablespoons of white, granulated sugar with one tablespoon of water, and place on a spoon for the bee to reach. You can also help by sharing this post to raise awareness.

It seems like a lot of people are interested in being part of the solution!

The decline of the bee population could be devastating on the entire ecosystem of the planet. Bees are needed to pollinate crops. They pollinate one third of the worldwide food supply!

Farmers rely on certain bees to pollinate certain crops, and it is crucial that a diversity of bees inhabit the earth. Some types of bees are more efficient at the pollination of specific crops than others, and without them, those crops couldn’t survive. Bees are indispensable!

As Albert Einstein has already said:

“Mankind will not survive the honeybees’ disappearance for more than five years.”

While no one seems to know if Albert Einstein truly did make this unsettling revelation, there does seem to be a great deal of truth to it.

But what can we do? Well, as Mary Poppins knew very well, a spoonful of sugar could be the solution to the problem. A spoonful of sugar saves the bees.

When bees are too tired to return to their hives, you can help them by simply leaving a spoonful of sugar on your lawn. As Sir Attenborough’s message explains, mix a simple solution of two tablespoons of granulated white sugar with a tablespoon of water. Leave this solution somewhere on your property, and the bees will find it. If you find a bee that is tired and sluggish, place the spoonful of sugar near the bee.

Bees will drink the solution and be revived enough to head on home. This small act of heroism on your part could have astounding repercussions. Especially if everyone does it!

Here are some other tips that you can easily put into practice to help fight the decline of bees:

  1. Plant a bee-friendly flower garden to help pollinate and give bees the nutrients that they need.
  2. Do not use pesticides on your yard. There are many natural alternatives to keep unwanted insects out of your yard.
  3. Buy local and raw honey. It is delicious!
  4. Buy local organic food grown by farmers you know and trust.
  5. Start your own bee colony and help repopulate the dying species.
  6. Share this article with others to spread the word.

Caring for bees could literally save the world. As they say, kindness is like sugar. It makes life a little sweeter for all of us.
