Should you peel peaches before eating them? The answer here!

Surely you wondered, at least once, which fruit has an edible skin? Should you be peeling a fruit before eating it?

Well, you should know that almost all skins are edible. Fruits like apple, pear, plum and peach have always been eaten with the skin on. Which is the most healthy way!

Good to know: the skin of the apple contains 70 times more quercetin than meat, a very important secondary plant substance. The same goes for pears: the pear skin contains more vitamin C than the pear itself. Do you peel the nectarines? Mistake ! Nectarine skin contains potassium and magnesium, as well as vitamin E and beta-carotene. In general, the skin absorbs most of the solar energy and protects the interior from the elements. That’s why it contains so many valuable substances.

So, what should you do when it comes to peaches? Eat the skin, as it contains a high concentration of antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals, which is more intense than in their flesh. One study even found that removing the skin from peaches eliminated almost half of its antioxidants.

While, many people prefer to remove the skin because of its taste but also because of allergies. Yes, some people are allergic to it! However, peach skin is generally healthy and safe to eat for most people.

However, peach skin may contain more pesticides than the flesh which is the down side of eating the skin. You can reduce pesticide levels by washing the peach before eating it. If your budget allows it, you can also choose organic peaches at the stores.

The bottom line is, you should definitely keep the skin on as it contains more nutrients, but be sure to wash your fruits thoroughly before eating them.

Enjoy the summer season and its fresh fruits!

Do you like peaches? Do you usually eat the skin or peel it?
