Autumn means apple season! Here's a delicious and very easy recipe to make your own apple butter. Almost no work required, the slow cooker does it all!

Ingredients:

  • 5 pounds Granny Smith apples (cored and cut)
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon (or to taste)
  • ⅛ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg (or to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon ground allspice
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 splash water

Preparation:

  1. Start by prepping the apples by coring and chopping them into 1" pieces. You don't have to peel them.
  2. Place the apple pieces in your slow cooker. Pour the white sugar, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and vinegar over the apples. Add in a splash of water and mix well.
  3. Cook on "High" setting until apples are starting to soften and release liquid - this should take about 1 to 2 hours. Then, reduce the heat to "Low" , remove the cover and until all the apple flesh is dissolve for about 5 to 6 hours while stirring occasionally.
  4. Use an immersion blender and puree until you achieve a smooth texture. Then, continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until the mixture has darkened and thicken for about 4 hours more. For a nicer consistency, pass apple butter through a strainer.
  5. Transfer to a sealed glass container and refrigerate until cool. Enjoy!
