If we do not used them within 2 weeks of purchase, onions and garlic germinate and rot. I often put them in compost!

What's this life hack? You just have to keep them in a brown paper bag with holes like this!
Make several holes with a hole punch. Fold the bags in 2 or 4 to punch several holes at the same time.
Fill the bags only half-way with onions or garlic, fold the top of the bag and close it with a clip for chips' bag.
Store the bags in a cool and dark place, let the air circulate well.
